Study on European Marathons 2016

Last update: March 27th, 2017

The number of participants in Marathon races in Europe stagnated in 2016 for the first time since the data are collected in the "Marathon in Europe data base". All in all, slightly less than 640,000 runners were counted in the events covered by the data base. This is roughly the same figure as in the previous year (chart 1). Thus, the upward trend seems being interrupted  if not stopped. However, the decline partially is owed to special factors: The Marathon in Malaga (Spain; 2015 about 2700 Finisher) was cancelled due to heavy rain storms, and a second Spanish race, the Castellon Marathon (2015: 1770 Finisher), was shifted from December to February, so that there was no 2016 edition. Adjusting  for these special factors, a slight increase of 0.6% might have been recorded.

Technical  note: For 2016, the data base contains about 340 marathon races in 38 European countries. The selection of the races is motivated by two ideas: The first is, to take on board all races of a certain size regardless in which country they take place; the treshold is set at about 200 finishers. The second idea is, to cover the relevant races in each country. This may lead to the inclusion also of smaller races in those countries, where the marathon scene is less developed. The data base is extended whenever information on additional races beome available. The estimate is that about 90 per cent of all marathon finishers in Europe are covered by the data base.

Despite of total participation stagnating the number of big races, understood here as races with less mor than 10,000 finishers, has increased to 16; in 2015 its have been 14m coming from only 9 in 2010. The caces in Brighton (U.K) and Sevilla (ESP) surpassed this threshold for the first time. Major advances are obeserved for the Dublin marathon, which jumped to rank 4 auft rank 8 in the year before, and for the Rome marathon. In particular the Stockhol marathon and the Hamburg marathon experienced major losses as weill in terms of participants as well as in terms of the ranking. For the first time, four Spanish races can be found in the top-list (Table 1)
